With a market value estimated at 23.03 billion U.S. dollars, Mexican people have quite an appetite for dairy products. In terms of consumer trends, wellness and health are gaining momentum in Mexico, where almost 70 percent of the population is overweight. As such, the emergence of an anti-milk movement and a new labeling guideline proposed by the Senate could affect the attractiveness of dairy products. Following consumer demands and interests, several manufacturers are introducing new probiotic products, reduced in sugar and fat. In the same vein, innovative dairy alternatives are taking up an increasing amount of market space.
Can Mexico satiate its citizens’ appetite for dairy?
Mexico’s dairy industry is an expanding one. For example, as of 2021, Mexico counted 6.6 million dairy cows, actively producing around 12.5 billion liters of milk. However, even though production keeps growing every year, Mexico does not currently manufacture enough dairy products to meet all its people’s demands. After some significant fluctuations in recent years, dairy product imports are once again on the rise. The country’s leading supplier is the United States, far ahead of other trade partners, despite the recent trade issues between the two countries.
