DoorDash – statistics & facts

Founded in Palo Alto, California, by four Stanford University students as PaloAltoDelivery.com in 2013, Door Dash has come a long way since its founders started taking phone calls and delivering food for students on campus. Today the company sits atop the online food delivery market in the United States with a market share of 65 percent, and a gross order volume of more than 53 billion U.S. dollars.

Dashing success

While the pandemic benefitted many players in the online food delivery market, DoorDash was particularly successful in outpacing the competition and building lasting customer engagement in the United States. The company’s success was due to its focus on delivering to consumers in suburban and rural areas that were largely underserved by food delivery giants. The strategy came to fruition relatively fast. By early 2019, the company’s market share surpassed that of key rivals in the U.S. market, Grubhub and Uber Eats. The following year, DoorDash had raised some 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in funding, making the company one of the largest recipients of funding in the online food delivery sector worldwide. Despite never turning in a profit and the highly competitive industry it operates in, the start-up was only seven years old when its stock market debut valued the company at a whopping 72 billion U.S. dollars in December 2020.

Global expansion efforts

Beyond its success in its home market, DoorDash vied for consumer reach overseas. In 2022, DoorDash was the most visited online food delivery website worldwide, and the fourth most downloaded food delivery app globally with more than 27 million downloads. That year, DoorDash completed its acquisition of Finnish company Wolt, a key player in the European food delivery market. In a deal worth more than eight billion U.S. dollars, it was the second highest-valued e-commerce startup acquisition in 2022. With access to the 23 markets in which Wolt operates, DoorDash recorded annual revenues of 6.6 billion U.S. dollars that year, up from approximately 885 million dollars just three years prior in 2019.

Challenges ahead

The path to growth DoorDash embarked on has been nothing short of a success story. However, the company still faces significant challenges. In 2022, recession fears and inflationary pressures disrupted global markets, and DoorDash was not spared the repercussions of tapering growth. In November 2022, the company announced it was laying off 1,250 corporate employees in an effort to cut costs. This is in addition to competitive pressures in the industry to reduce fees charged to consumers amid inflation. These challenges may put a dent in DoorDash’s quest to achieve, and maintain, profitability in the future.
