Tourism in Venice - statistics & facts

A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Venice fascinates people all over the world with its arts and architecture, renowned Lagoon, and the evocative maze of bridges and canals. Spreading over a group of 118 small islands, the capital of the North-Eastern region of Veneto is one of the most popular Italian tourist cities. It then comes as no surprise that the Serenissima – as Venice is nicknamed – ranked among the most visited Italian municipalities, with roughly 3.6 million overnight stays in 2020. That year, however, overnight stays in Venice dropped sharply compared to 2019 due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Tourism in Venice during the COVID-19 pandemic

When breaking down the tourist arrivals in Venice by origin, it becomes clear the paramount role played by international tourism in the city. That said, the health crisis hit inbound tourism harder than domestic one, as visitors from abroad accounted for nearly 77 percent of total arrivals in 2019 and just around 58 percent in 2021. That year, German travelers recorded the highest number of arrivals in the city, while the United States was by far the leading international travel market in Venice prior to the pandemic. In this respect, it is likely that trips were dictated by proximity during the first two years of the health crisis due to travel bans and strict safety regulations. When looking at Italian domestic tourism in 2021, visitors from the neighboring region of Lombardy recorded the highest number of Italian tourist arrivals in Venice.

Tourist accommodation in Venice

It is reasonable to think that Venice’s international popularity would equate to higher prices in the city. As of June 2022, Venice topped the list of Italian cities with the highest average price for four-star hotels, with an average price per night of nearly 196 euros. While the number of tourists increased steadily before the pandemic, the number of hotels in the municipality of Venice has experienced a decreasing trend since 2012, reporting a significant annual decline in 2021. That year, the number of non-hotel accommodation establishments in the city also fell compared to 2020, decreasing by around nine percent.
