Canada’s meat industry is by far the largest sub-sector in the country. Meat product manufacturing generates about 22.6 billion Canadian dollars in manufacturing sales. This is slightly over twice as much as dairy product manufacturing, the next biggest sub-sector. Expressed as revenue shares, animal slaughtering and processing accounts for 28.2 percent of the industry’s revenues, while dairy products only account for 13.3 percent. A significant number of international food processing companies are active in Canada. Notable companies include PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz, Parmalat, and Nestlé. The Kraft Heinz Company generates annual net sales of 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in Canada. However, Heinz U.S. sales are significantly higher. Among Canadian companies, Saputo, a dairy product focused company, is one of the largest operators in the sector. Saputo has an annual revenue of almost 15 million Canadian dollars. Other leading food manufacturers from Canada include Agropur Dairy Cooperative and Maple Leaf Foods, which generated sales of 7.71 and 4.3 billion Canadian dollars, respectively.
