iFood: the food delivery behemoth
No company can overshadow iFood's share of the Brazilian online food delivery market. The company founded in 2011 in Osasco, a municipality neighboring São Paulo City, holds a staggering 84 percent of all e-food delivery bookings in the country and tops every ranking on a wide variety of metrics, from users' favorite online food delivery apps to website visits, share of search, and app downloads.Competitors like Rappi, Aiqfome, and 99 Food do not come near the usage rates iFood enjoys. According to a 2022 survey, almost nine in ten surveyed respondents in Brazil used iFood (87 percent), whereas the user share did not exceed 20 percent among any of its competitors.
Who orders food delivery in Brazil?
With a service as extended as ordering food online, probably the question should be who doesn't use food delivery in Brazil. But regarding user demographics, recent data shows online food delivery consumers tend to belong to the 25 to 44 age range and the medium or high-income segments. Usage is almost evenly distributed among genders, with a slightly higher share of male users, at 51 percent.When asked about their motivations for ordering food online, Brazilians claim they have more control over their restaurant and takeout expenses when they turn to food delivery apps or websites. In addition, a vast majority of users like ordering meals online because it saves them time, and many have even adopted the habit as a daily routine. However, there is no time more popular than weekends or holidays to order food online, which over two-thirds of Brazilian respondents acknowledge as their favorite situation to use food delivery apps.
