Biggest players and where they operate
The largest European market for food delivery can be found in the United Kingdom, where revenues from online food delivery amounted to 31 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Already popularized by its success in the United States, Uber Eats also found a place to stay in the UK, achieving around 3.5 million app downloads in 2022, ahead of Deliveroo and Just Eat. However, in terms of restaurant and food delivery bookings, a survey revealed that around 71 percent of UK consumers opted for Just Eat for their orders in 2022.In Germany, which trails behind the UK as the second-biggest European market for online food delivery, a local player dominated the food delivery market in 2022. Lieferando, a brand owned by Just Eat, captured around 80 percent of all online food orders made by German consumers. While Just Eat maintains a strong grip on the European food delivery market, it is by no means an uncontested industry leader. Since entering the European market, Uber Eats has gained significant traction among consumers, capturing about two-thirds of all French online food delivery bookings in 2022, and ranking third in terms of app downloads in countries like Germany and Spain.
U.S.-based DoorDash featured in the European rankings for the first time in 2022, garnering 210,000 app downloads in the UK and some 98,000 in Germany. Since its acquisition of Helsinki-based Wolt in late 2021, DoorDash appears set to slowly extend its consumer reach across the Atlantic.
