In 2022, most of Google’s 279.8 billion U.S. dollar revenue came from advertising, the highest annual result to date. That year, Google Sites advertising earnings amounted to 191.69 billion U.S. dollars, while the annual advertising revenue of Google network websites reached 32.78 billion U.S. dollars. Among the leading search engines, the worldwide market share of Google Search in January 2023 was 84.69 percent, with many localized versions available. Although Google’s product originally was based upon online search, the company has significantly broadened its services throughout the years. Video content-sharing site YouTube was one of Google’s most prolific and expensive acquisitions, being heavily integrated into its online presence and forever changing the dynamics of user-generated content and online video curation.Apart from online search, advertising, and online video, Google has branched further into content, most notably the Android mobile operating system which accounted for almost 70 percent of the global smartphone operating system market in 2022. Content for Android devices can be purchased via the Google Play Store, a digital distribution platform through which over 2.6 million apps are available. Furthermore, its wide range of products also includes the Chrome browser and operating system ChromeOS, hardware like the Chromecast, and the company's series of mobile devices, not to mention its own online payment system Google Pay.
Google and the AI race
In 2023, Google’s parent company is fiercely focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) after generative AI and AI-powered search exploded as the next big trend in tech. Alphabet ranks among the leading patent owners in the field and has been acquiring a significant number of AI startups, and has even started to report the DeepMind AI project as part of its corporate costs. In October 2016, CEO Sundar Pichai claimed Google as an “AI-first company” – however, Google appears to have missed the starting gun of the consumer-focused AI race after the mangled launch of its own public chatbot service Bard, which is set to directly compete with industry darling ChatGPT.
